Back in 1997 the Jugulator album was released by Judas Priest. This marked the
first full length to feature vocalist Tim Owens. Owens would go on to do one
more full length with Priest (Demolition). After Priest, Owens joined Iced Earth
for almost 5 years. With all this music experience under his belt it is the
perfect time for Tim “Ripper” Owens to release his first solo album.
I was heart broken and pissed off when Owens was given the boot from Iced Earth.
Whatever you may think that was bullshit. I was glad when Owens did the vocal
work on the Perpetual Flame album with Yngwie Malmsteen. This album seemed to
breathe new life into Owens and I most certainly hear it on Play My Game.
Play My Game features a list of guest stars ranging from Rudy Sarzo, Simon
Wright, James Lomenzo, Dennis Hayes, Bob Kulick and a whole lot more. Owens has
a ton of friends in the industry and all of them bring their A game on Play My
Game. There is never a dull moment from these guys. The instrumentation is
definitely the highlight on the entire album.
Tim “Ripper” Owens also brings a lot to the table on this record. After all this
time he has never shinned with his writing skills as a musician. True he did
lend his part on past releases but on Play My Game Owens pushes all the buttons.
Song structures are beautifully done and the lyrical content great with the
heavy metal music. Owens has gotten a whole lot better and I hope he spits in
the faces of everyone that said he could never do it.
Final Verdict
It only took around 20 years for Tim “Ripper” Owens to release his first solo
album. I think the past bands Owens has been in really helped out Play My Game.
The songs are nonstop metal from the very first seconds. As much as I like this
album I can not wait until the next solo album. Owens thank you, Play My Game is
brutal!
