Board games can be fun if you and your friends are ever board. Playing video games all the time can get a little boring. Mere Mortals realized that the board game market is still big and people love the Nintendo Wii. Put them together and you get another winner.

If you couldn’t tell I was being a smart ass. There isn’t a whole lot going on in Ultimate Board Game Collection. You may just want to say the games title a few times as a mini game with your friends, which might provide more entertaining.

For thirty dollars you get eleven board games. Do we really want to play checkers or knock off versions of other classic board games on the Wii? You really need to ask yourself that question before you even think about renting or buying this game. It would be a lot easier to find those old board games in your attic; this game is down right boring.

Fan boys shouldn’t go bashing the Wii yet because this game came out on both the Playstation 2 and Playstation Portable. Gamers got to experience this game first on Sony’s system. The developers must have seen extra dollars signs some where.

There are three sections to pick from in this game, Classic, Family and Strategy. All three of these categories have different games to pick from. The games in Ultimate Board Game Collection are.

Classic
1. Chess
2. Checkers
3. Reversi
4. Backgammon

Family
1. Jigsaw Puzzles
2. Chinese Checkers
3. Naval Battle
4. Wordcubes

Strategy
1. Mahjong
2. Connect Four
3. Sudoku
4. Gomoku

Like I said before some of these games are complete knock offs of other classic board games. Since all of these games are time tested you get to take your turn during everybody else’s. How in the hell is this making Naval Battle fun and challenging? Just take a wild guess which board game this one is copying.

The games controls are actually pretty good. In order to play any of these games you just use the Wii Mote, move over to your location and go from there. These are the kind of games that work real well for the Wii, but do we really need to see them all the time? However these controls can run into a problem whenever you play games like Sudoku and Mahjong. If you mess up you’ll hear an annoying buzzing noise.

Ultimate Board Game Collection does offer four player support, which is expected for a game like this. There is no online play at all in this game, again isn’t anything new because most Wii games are not online. I did find some fun playing Chess with a friend, but why spend thirty dollars on this whenever I can buy a real Chess board game for pennies.

I need to bring up one more thing about this game. During the games three or four techno tracks you will hear a woman’s voice say “Can I start again?” I am not making this up, every couple of minutes you will hear this statement. Did somebody that worked on this game want to start over after it was complete?

Final Verdict
Once again we have another Wii game that has you asking yourself some questions before you purchase it. Do you really want to spend this much money on a game like this? You can go to any store and buy a majority of these games for no money at all. It may be best to keep your money and spend it else where.
