Hellboy is ready to take on the Playstation Portable with Hellboy: The
Science of Evil. Mike Mignola has been creating Hellboy comics for years now and
now we can finally enjoy his visions on the road. Can Hellboy: The Science of
Evil amaze fans with its gameplay or will it end up in bargin bins before the
end of the month?
The Playstation Portable version of the game is done a little differently than
its older brothers on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Mike Mignola helped in the
process of this game and it shows with the Hellboy name. When it comes to the
actual gameplay and story you will be asking Mignola if he wasn’t feeling too
well during the games development process.
Hellboy: The Science of Evil is a boring game. The only reason I played through
this game was to see if there were going to be any tie ins between the game and
the movie (see Hellboy II: The Golden Army review). To not spoil anything I will
just tell you that your money might be better off in your wallet. The Science of
Evil may cause you to despise anything that bares the Hellboy name.
This linear game takes you on a journey through ill-placed button sequences (hit
the square button damn it!) and ugly scenery. If you hate how things look then
there is a good chance that Hellboy can pick it up and do whatever you want with
it. Trying to hit enemies with objects, hell even with your hands, seems clunky.
Even if you can hit your enemies there is a good chance that it won’t do
anything. I never know if I was actually killing an enemy or giving him a back
rub.
The developers did add in combo attacks, but once again you never get the
feeling that your attacks are hitting the enemy. You will be stuck at the same
enemy spawning point, using the same button smash combo over and over again.
When you finally kill an enemy you can earn runes. What do these runes do? They
supposedly give you more strength, but that doesn’t really matter whenever the
enemies sticking around after a million hits.
You can use Hellboy’s gun in this game, honestly you can. I wish I could say
that the gun was worth while, but I never seemed to do anything groundbreaking
with it. At boss battles I just seemed to cause noise. The Science of Evil
really wants you to run and strike during every boss battle in the game.
Seriously, run and hit. You know what just pretend that there is no gun in this
game. Wait; just pretend that there is no Hellboy: The Science of Evil.
During the game you will be treated to piss poor animated sequences and
dialogue. For whatever reason, they forgot to add in spoken dialogue, something
that seems mandatory in every PSP game. I really started to wonder if Mignola
had something to do with this project because this doesn’t really feel like a
Hellboy product. He is red, but what about everything else?
I am just going to throw this one out there. Hellboy: The Science of Evil has
terrible camera work. Did Sega lend out their code for the camera in this game?
Look to die at numerous parts during the game, thanks to the camera.
There is one nice thing about this game. The Science of Evil has some
unlockables, ranging from trailers to concept art. I found some of these
unlockables to be interesting, but I then realized that I had to play through
the game to unlock everything. Nobody in their right mind will want to do this
just for some art work.
Final Verdict
Hellboy: The Science of Evil is a terrible PSP game. I didn’t find anything real
good about this game. The Hellboy name is most likely the best part of this
game. If you are a Hellboy fan then you better stay away from this game.
