The original Hellboy movie may have not broken any records when it came out
in the theaters, but it did spawn a huge cult following. Because of the fans, a
second Hellboy movie got the green light, but this time Universal Studios was
behind the picture. Four years later and we now have one of the best comic book
movie adaptations.
Hellboy II is the kind of sequel every director wishes they could make. The
movie has enough funny moments to be a comedy but at the same time it has enough
action to please Die Hard and Indiana Jones fans. Guillermo del Toro made the
perfect movie, everyone can watch Hellboy II and find something enjoyable.
In order to make sure Hellboy (Ron Perlman) isn’t seen by the public, pyromaniac
Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), fish head Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) are told to watch
Hellboy’s every movement when he is out solving a case. When things don’t work
out right, Tom Manning (Jeffrey Tambor) is forced, by the government, to allow
Johann Krauss (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) to step in.
With everything getting all sticky back at the B.P.R.D. Headquarters, Prince
Nuada (Luke Goss) is trying to find all the pieces to the golden crown, so he
can resurrect the Golden Army. When the Prince finds one of the pieces, he now
has to get a hold of the last two pieces, which happen to be in the position of
his father, the king, and his own sister.
From comic book movie standards, Hellboy II has a real in-depth story. There
seems to be two stories going on in this movie. Liz and Hellboy are having a
conflict with each other, since they are now living together in the B.P.R.D.
Headquarters. The other story in this movie deals with Price Nuada and his
journey on resurrecting the Golden Army. Both of these stories are completely
different than one another; however they do meet up during the film. When these
two stories combine, Toro deals something very nice in the script, which may
change the shape of the Hellboy franchise.
Hellboy II takes what Guillermo del Toro is known for and blows it way out of
proportion, but in a good way. Toro is known for wowing audiences with his
character creations and all of the monsters and non-human characters look
awesome. Hellboy II is stunning, when the movie isn’t showing off its visuals
there is either a funny moment or an interesting part in the plot.
Just like the first film the acting in Hellboy II is above comic book movie
standards. Ron Perlman is still the perfect fit as the Hellboy character. Even
without the makeup, Perlman looks like a real life red demon. Ron Perlman is not
the only good actor in this movie, same goes with the others. Who steals the
show is the voice talent from Seth MacFarlane. The funny man has what it takes
to be a leading man when it comes to voices. His character is one of the
highlights of Hellboy II.
Final Verdict
Hellboy II: The Golden Army is the surprise hit of the summer. This is the kind
of movie that anybody can go and watch. It is alright to go and see those other
big movies this summer, but make sure you go and see Hellboy II. The movie is
the real deal when it comes to action and comedy.
